Hi, and welcome! I’m Bronwyn David - an artist, maker, and proud Trawlwoolway woman, living and creating on beautiful Bunurong Country where I’ve spent my whole life.
I didn’t come to art through formal training or classrooms. Instead, creativity has always been part of who I am. I’ve had a lifelong passion for making and painting, and over the years, it’s been my way of expressing, grounding, and connecting - especially in the moments when life has felt uncertain.
How It All Began
Like so many stories, mine began during the early days of the COVID-19 lockdowns, around six years ago. Those long, quiet days sparked something in me: a deep need to create. My house and studio were already overflowing with paintings (I’m sure some of you can relate!), so I started looking for new surfaces to work on. At first, I painted on fabric and faux leather - just for the joy of it. That soon evolved into painting on leather, and eventually, cutting it up into shapes and experimenting with earrings.
I had no idea at the time that these little wearable artworks would become the heart of my business.
From Hobby to Business
What started as a creative outlet quickly grew into something more. I began sharing my earrings with friends and family through Facebook, and then listing a few pieces on Marketplace. One of my early customers - Amber - bought several pairs and encouraged me to share my work on a particular Facebook page. I took the leap, and the response absolutely blew me away.
That wave of support gave me the confidence to open an Etsy store, and about a year later, I launched my own website: Art by Bronwyn David.
What Makes My Work Unique
Each pair of earrings I create is one-of-a-kind, made from reclaimed leather sourced from industrial waste. I hand-paint every piece with my contemporary First Nations designs - vibrant, bold, and full of colour. I’ve never been one to stick to the “rules” when it comes to colour; I love exploring unexpected combinations and letting instinct guide me.
I also work with a strict zero-waste philosophy. Every scrap of leather gets used - whether it becomes a tiny accent piece or the centre of something bold and new. To me, sustainability isn’t just a practice, it’s part of the story I want each piece to carry.
